ICS Honors NJHS Inductees

On Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, the Irvington Community School held an induction ceremony for nine ICS students who qualified for membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Nearly 50 parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, and ICS staff members attended this very special event.

To mark the occasion, previous inductees Lauren Tolley and Clara Mendoza read descriptions of the society’s Four Pillars during the Candlelight Ceremony, an NJHS tradition for more than 80 years. The Pillars represent the qualities held in the highest esteem by the society and make up the criteria students must meet for NJHS membership. These qualities are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. In short, the society honors students who perform well both academically and socially and who act as a constant positive force at school. Inductees must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 (i.e., a “B” average). All inductees made the ICS honor roll at the conclusion of the first quarter, and several had perfect attendance.

In addition to meeting the NJHS criteria, inductees were required to write a 500-word essay and obtain five recommendations from three of their core subject teachers, one non-core school faculty member or administrator, and one person outside of school.

The new ICS NJHS inductees are:

  • Michael Arnold – 7th grade
  • Rebecca Bokenkamp – 7th grade
  • Mariah Misner-Hampton – 7th grade
  • Chelsie Harper – 8th grade
  • Charles Irving – 8th grade
  • Bailey Lewis – 7th grade
  • Quinn Losh – 7th grade
  • D.J. Turner – 8th grade
  • Tyler Woolen – 7th grade

This is the second year that the ICS has participated in the NJHS. Our school’s NJHS coordinator is 7th and 8th grade Social Studies teacher Nikki Meyers.

Of note, this school year, the NJHS will conduct several school-wide and community-wide service projects. Please be sure to check back for news about these events!
