“Pennies for Patients” Fundraiser for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Ends on a Record-Breaking Note

From March 10 - 21, 2008, ICS K-8 students raised money in a school-wide community service project on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help support research and patient services programs for children afflicted by blood cancers, and their families. According to the society, “Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of 20.” Approximately 72% of the society’s total fundraising dollars directly support cancer research and patient services.

By collecting funds for this worthy cause, ICS students learned that through their efforts, they can make a difference in the lives of those who suffer from such illnesses. Parents also teamed up with their children to help collect funds and/or made matching contributions.

The original ICS target of $500 was shattered threefold, with the final collection reaching more than $1,600! A Papa John’s Pizza party for the winning class will be enjoyed by Mrs. Thorn's 1st graders, who raised $234.27.

This is the first year the ICS has participated in the annual fundraising event. And there's a good reason to get involved, as childhood leukemia has hit close to home in our community. The school’s interest was inspired by an ICS student who has been a leukemia patient. His fellow students’ fundraising efforts are in honor of him and his family.

The five classes that raised the most money for Pennies for Patients were:

1. Mrs. Thorn’s 1st grade class: $234.27
2. Ms. Dwyer’s 4th grade class: $174.18
3. Mrs. Lannan’s 1st grade class: $164.94
4. Mrs. Griffith’s kindergarten class: $127.52
5. Ms. Jacob’s 8th grade homeroom: $76.85

Thanks to 6th grade teacher Gareth Yeoman for coordinating the ICS Pennies for Patients fundraising effort, and to our parents and students for their generous outpouring of support.
