ICS 2nd Graders Visit Irvington Starbucks for “Coffee Economics 101”

As a followup to the 2nd grade economics unit in social studies, Mrs. Rago arranged for the entire 2nd grade, including Ms. Hall’s class, to visit the Irvington Starbucks store on East Washington Street on Monday, February 25, 2008.

Store manager Shawn King gave a presentation to the students regarding Starbucks’ products, involvement in Fair Trade coffee, coffee beans, and the Starbucks mission statement (preceded, of course, by a 2nd grade-level explanation of mission statements).

In addition to the 40-plus students, Ms. Hall, and Mrs. Rago, about 10 ICS parents attended the field trip. Mrs. Rago commented, “I was impressed with the students' behavior. Our Starbucks visit was not only educational but a lot of fun.”

Mrs. Rago’s students prepared for the field trip by writing stories they thought Starbucks patrons might enjoy reading. Ms. Hall’s class wrote winter poems. Several of the students read their work to the throng.

In turn, Mr. King wrote a poem for the 2nd graders, which he “thought long and hard about” during the creative process. He read the poem in Mrs. Rago’s room on Tuesday, February 26. It goes like this:

    Here at Irvington Community School
The 2nd graders are so cool
They read and write so well
You can hear it in the poems they write and the stories they tell
That’s why we are bringing them some hot cocoa
For their teachers sake, I hope it doesn’t make them loco!

Upon hearing Mr. King’s poem, students enjoyed a cup of Starbucks hot chocolate, topped off with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. On the house!
